WTF is ‘ecstatic dance’??
Well, put simply, it’s all about moving your body in a way that feels good FOR YOU. There’s no steps to learn, no ‘alignment cues.’ You are totally free to express yourself through movement.
There are some ‘rules’ or guidelines. So when you first arrive we take 15 mins to go through these with you. The main rule is no talking, no eye contact and no communication with fellow dancers. The room is kept dark so you can’t really see anyone else, and we encourage you to keep your eyes closed as much as possible throughout.
It can feel strange at first, especially when you’re not used to moving in this way. It’s totally natural to feel awkward and self - conscious but because we create such a safe container, those feelings do fade as the beat takes over. When you move from your thinking mind down into your body, you really connect with your natural expression of movement. It’s not about how it looks, it’s all about how you feel.
This is not a new practice. All around the world, since the birth of humanity, people have used dance to express emotions, in ceremony, celebration and for healing. Unfortunately in the West, we’ve lost a lot of these rituals of dancing round a fire every evening, or story telling through dance.
We are born to dance! The word dance can be misleading as it can imply a choreographed expression that looks a certain way. This is free movement, not for anyone else, not to look good, it’s just for you.
I recommend trying it! If you don’t like it, no big deal, you can always leave 😀 however I suspect that like me, you’ll fall in love with the practice and start dancing every damn day!
