Golden Hour
Every day at around 4.40pm something magical happens. Don’t miss out. The sun sinks (or more accurately, the Earth spins) and the world is transformed. It’s ‘Golden Glow time. Broulee is home to many majestic, slender gums, and wise, wizened Banksias. It’s their time to shine. The sinking sun or rotating Earth illuminates their canopies, gifting each tree with her own halo. I ride around aimlessly, never looking at the road, pedalling towards the ocean, transfixed on the light show above. As I turn the road back to my house, the sun shines for a moment through the trees, directly onto my face. ‘Gods rays’, they say.
Candyfloss clouds tend to follow. By 5.10pm, the world is trying on another cloak as the shards of sunlight fade altogether. Now the trees are purple, and soon they turn black against the ever shifting sky. This happens EVERY SINGLE DAY, and every single day is a totally different show. Admission is free. There’s no queue. Simply get outside and look up.
Alice Walker says it best: “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see she’s always trying to please us back.”
Nature is God. God is Nature. For me, there is no separation. If the word causes issues for you, drop the word. But don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. The cure for our rampant loneliness, additions, apathy, fear and depression is CONNECTION. We are hard-wired for it. We need to feel love and belonging as much as we need food and water.
We can’t always rely on other people to give us this connection. So I believe it is imperative to strengthen and nurture our relationship with Nature, Universal Consciousness, Source, Spirit, God, whatever you want to call the energy that makes the plants grow, the planets rotate around the sun and mould to grow on the food you forgot about in the bottom of the fridge.
We are alive! We get to be here and experience it all. Now isn’t that pure magic?
