What is Foundations Grappling workshop?
Foundation Grappling is a beginner oriented workshop spanning the course of 4 weeks where you will learn the basic, foundational positions, submissions & principals of grappling.
It's a relaxed beginners class where you will be shown in a very slow, methodical manner the foundational techniques of grappling.
Wrestling & Grappling is an ancient practice that spans thousand of years through human history & any cultures. Did you know in ancient India wrestling was called 'kushti' & was deeply intertwined with monkey god Hanuman who was known for his strength, devotion & perseverance? Additionally, wrestling was central to the formation of the Olympic games in ancient Greece.
Grappling is an incredibly technical, dynamic & invigorating practice where you will be practicing effective self defense techniques with your training partners & fostering a sense of trust & commraderie with one another while we explore this fascinating & ancient practices which has it's roots from all over the world.
My intention with teaching grappling at Soul Tribe is to bring people together in a fun, positive atmosphere.
Here are the ways in which practicing grappling will benefit you
Strength & conditioning
Wrestling is probably the oldest form of resistance training, as you resist against your training partners bodies, you move your own body in space & this has a tremendous stimulus on the human body, including the core strength, improved balance & stability.
Increased body awareness & mind/body connection
Grappling is like a moving meditation. It requires you to be fully present in the moment because when you are grappling you have to be fully focused on what is happening now, where your balance & leverage is, where your feet are, what are you gripping onto, you have to be connected & aware of what the other person is doing, you have to be aware of your breathe because it's linked to your fitness & stamina.
All of this present moment awareness is happening in an incredibly dynamic situation where you & your training partner are moving, flowing like a river from one position to the next in a kind of playful, fun, safe, controlled practice of combat that is unlike other situations we find ourselves in our day to day life.
I'm especially excited to see people with yoga experience who have cultivated their present moment awareness & their ability of concentration because I think these attributes will be a boon to their grappling practice.
Learning new skills & self defense
There's an entire world to begin exploring with martial arts & grappling. Every rep, every new technique, anytime your grappling with a training partner it's always something new, it is it's own unique, fresh experience every time. There's constantly new problems to solve & multiple ways to solve each problem.
With calm, effort & relentless consistency (much like Hanuman!) you can excel in the realms of grappling.
A fascinating new application for flexibility
You don't have to be flexible to improve your grappling skills but it's certainly a helpful attribute. As a regular yoga practitioner you'll enjoy being challenged through new ranges of motion, often with the added resistance of your training partners body & the compounded cardiovascular demand - all the while, most importantly, keeping your mind cool, calm & collected.
Season yogis with a keen eye will find many similarities between the Asana positions & positions involved with grappling such as Happy baby, downward dog & even chaturanga!
Let's explore human movement together in one of it's most foundational practices of grappling.
Stress management & mental health
Practicing grappling, learning new things & training in a group environment is an incredible way to process the stress of everyday life. My time with martial arts has brought me unforgettable bursts of euphoria after training & I promise you'll leave the class on Tuesday nights feeling amazing & light as a feather. Martial arts is a precious tool of gratitude & a powerful perspective enhancer.
Increased confidence & empowerment
The sense for empowerment & confidence from a regular martial arts practice can affect your mindset positively in your day to day life & in your yoga practice.
Build resilience by overcoming challenges, learning new things, foster mental health & connect with other who are also courageous enough to try something new & learn new things.
Community & connection
This is all about bringing people together & fostering a sense of community, trust & connection in a beautiful studio space where the values of non violence, truthfulness, contentment & community are paramount.
Supporting one another in embarking a new journey of learning & physical, mental & emotional development through the practices of grappling.
My name's Joel & I'd love to see you in person at foundations grappling workshop beginning on Tuesday nights at 7pm where we will expand our minds & physicality in a new domain that bears wondrous fruit for those willing to adopt the traits of Hanuman the monkey god in strength, humility, perseverance & an unwavering focus.
